That's when it hit her: The kids were practicing science.
While I have the highest respect for my esteemed colleagues in Madison, I find myself disagreeing with Steinkuehler's conclusions. These kids are not practicing science, they're practicing being human beings. And as human beings, we find new and inventive ways to meet a challenge whenever one is presented to us.
All one needs to do is look back through history. Aliens didn't build the pyramids; humans did. Humans who were given the seemingly impossible task rose to the challenge and made it happen. The Flavian Amphitheatre (aka the Coliseum) didn't just appear when someone pulled the plug on a drain and the water swirled around. Humans wanted a better place to host their blood sport. So they devised a new method. Trains didn't start moving themselves. Humans had a problem of not enough labor. So they devised a solution.
Which isn't to say that these many engineering feats were devoid of what we today think of as "science". However, it is important to remember that the scientific process (i.e. the thing that separates "science" from simply "effort") is a formalized process that vets the actual facts from the statistical noise. If you are not following the formalized methodology, you are not performing "science".
Which isn't to say that I don't think these kids deserve mad props. They used their brains and were rewarded for it. Which is something to be proud of in a comfortable modern society that makes it all too easy to turn one's brain to the "off" position. :-)
The old days Scientific Method of objecttively searching for truth is more or less obsolete.
What old days? When scientists were beholden to Lords and Kings? People who could not only cut off funding with the wave of their hands but people would could have you tried and executed for discovering the "wrong" things?
Or do you mean before that in the ancient world, where great thinkers who spoke out were put to death? Trial of Socrates ring any bells?
You are experiencing whats called idealization of the fictional past. Things are most likely better now (post-enlightenment post-democracy post-civil rights) than ever. I mean, the kids of non-nobles going to university and teaching and publishing disagreeable things?? Scandalous!!

"Earth Hour" In fact, just as easily turns on the lights off.
Initially, the activity is only a call to Sydney, and savoring the activities of residents, has grown to become the world's largest one action to address climate change. March 28, 2009 8:30 pm, people around the world will be "Earth Hour" and lights out. We hope to have more than 1000 cities in 10 million people take part in this activity, the use of global efforts to work together to deal with global warming.
"Earth Hour" this activity takes the lead in 2007 to start in Australia, when there are around 2.2 million homes and businesses in Sydney lights for one hour. However, only a year later, "Earth Hour" has become a global and sustainable development activity, more than 35 countries as many as five million people involved. Cities all over the world landmark building, such as San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, the Roman Coliseum and Times Square billboards on all Coca-Cola stands for this purpose in the darkness, all urban residents have also been voiced by the environmental protection cause of the delay I hope the enthusiasm.
2009's "Earth Hour" is a global action, it calls for each person, every business and community are actively taking measures to join one of, should bear the duty, in order to create a sustainable development action tomorrow . By then, around the globe from Europe to the Americas landmark building will be standing in the darkness. And the peoples of the world through the lights are turned off in this manner, the Earth work together to create a better tomorrow.
Let us act now! March 28, 2009 Evening 8:30-9:30, lights are turned off one hour, with China making history.
More than 64 countries and regions have already participated in the 2009 "Earth Hour" activities. With more and more and more people realize that a small act can eventually have an enormous impact on the results, the number of participants is increasing.
"Earth Hour" a symbol of hopes, but also represents the action. Everyone can make everything from change.

3 Hour Diet
Eat Every 3 Hours
The 3 Hour diet is all about meal frequency. By eating every 3 hours, blood sugar levels will be more consistent and the bodies metabolism will remain in a heightened state.
For most people this will equate to about 5 meals per day - breakfast, lunch, and dinner - with two snacks in between. The 3-Hour diet addresses processed and fast foods - and much of the sales pitch of the book is about being able to lose weight and still eat some "junk" foods.
Food groups should always be combined - i.e. protein should be eaten with carbohydrates and fat (and fruit and vegetables where possible). Cruise recommends drinking 8 glasses of water per day.

Lean Cuisine Cheese cannelloni, side salad with nonfat dressing

Another example
For breakfast, a ham and cheese omelet, bread and lots of fruit.
Three hours later, a Pria bar. Three hours later, a lunch of beef enchilada, rice and a salad with regular dressing. Three hours later, a snack like fruit or a few cookies. Three hours later, dinner; salmon, rice, veggies, and three hours later, dessert, like chocolate mousse.
Diet, Exercise, and Eat Often
The principles of correct nutrition, appropriate exercise, and frequent eating are an effective strategy for losing weight. However the 3-Hour diet tries to be too popular at times. The book describes a method to pick appropriate portion sizes - rather then rigidly counting calories - but later goes on to restrict portion sizes to certain calories!
The by-line of the book also criticizes low-carb diets claiming that they do not work. This is a cheap shot as low-carb diets do work for some people (particularly those who are carbohydrate sensitive).
The 3-Hour Diet will be useful to many who are just beginning the journey of understanding nutrition and weight management - but it is only a beginning.
Many feel that the inclusion of so many processed foods is a sell-out - as healthy nutrition often includes only the most un-processed foods. Weight loss and nutrition are two separate but related issues. Fast food should always be a last-resort food - not a daily staple.
However for many people a diet like this is far more approachable than one that suddenly restricts food or calls for dramatic changes.
3 Hours to a Better Body?
The author makes some outrageous claims - such as "burn 2 pounds of fat per week, with belly fat first". Such a comment is completely false, as it is not possible to spot reduce body fat - it will burn off from all over the body, and is different for each person. Also, as is most weight loss diets, the body will eventually plateau - and many diets such as the 3-Hour diet seem to conveniently ignore this pattern.
The Three Hour Diet will be popular, but in the end offers very little in new science or nutrition.
